Pet Health Problems - What is Normal For My Pet?

So you think that something might be wrong with your pet but you're not sure what or how to check. Should you spend $100 to take them to the vet and get it checked out or should you just wait it out and see if anything changes, if they get better or worse? How do you know if it's a serious problem, if it is something that will pass, or if it is something that you can take care of at home? There's no way to know this without having some idea what 'normal' is for your pet.

So let's establish what's normal for your cat or dog and how to check them on a regular basis.

Vital Statistics

Normal Resting Pulse & Heart Rate:
Cats 150-200 bpm (beats per minute)
Small Dogs 90-120 bpm
Medium Dogs 70-110 bpm
Large Dogs 60-90 bpm

The pulse/heart rate should be strong, regular and easy to locate. The best place to locate it is at the femoral artery in the groin area. This can be found by placing your fingers on the inside of the hind leg and sliding your hand upward until the back of your fingers touch the abdomen. Gently move your fingers back and forth on the inside of the hind leg until you feel the pulsing blood. Count the number of pulses in 15 seconds and multiply by four to get the beats per minute (bpm).

It's important to know what is normal for your pet. If the pulse is high you may just have a nervous pet, or it may indicate a metabolic disorder or a primary heart problem. If it is slow and weak, you should check for other signs of shock or poison.

Normal Temperature:
Cats 102 F (38.5 C)
Dogs 101 F (38.0 C)
You take your pet's temperature by placing a thermometer in their rectum. If their temperature is 103.5 F or more, they have a fever. The thermometer should be almost clean when it is removed. Abnormalities are indicated by blood, diarrhea, or black, tarry stool.

The Eyes, Ears and Nose

The Eyes:
The surface of the eye (cornea) should be clear and the middle of the eye (pupil) should respond to light. The right and left pupils should be equal in size. The sclera (the white part of the eye) should be a clear white color and the conjunctiva (the pink tissue around the eye) should be a light pink color. If the sclera is yellow it can indicate liver disease and if the conjunctiva is dark pink with a white or greenish discharge there is an infection.

The Ears:
The outside of the ear (pinna) should be a light pink and feel flat. Any thickening could indicate an ear infection, allergy or blood blister in the ear. The inside of the ear (ear canal) should be easy to see and free of discharge. A foul smelling odor indicates an infection and a yellowy discharge often indicates a yeast infection. Hard black debris is an indication of ear mites.

The Nose:
Check for any signs of discharge. The occasional clear discharge is normal for some, but ongoing discharge is an indication of a problem, such as allergies.
