Although there are many names it goes by, a dog crate is basically a place to put one's dog as a permanent or temporary residence within a domestic household.  Alternatively, it can also imply a spot to keep the animal out of mischief.  No different from putting a young child in his baby chair during feeding times, imparting the same message to one's pet is meant as a form of activity in everyday life.  Since dogs are social animals by nature, being kept away from the festivities may be equivalent to a punishment.  It is therefore imperative to not treat the crating experience as such.  It is in fact an environment to be cherished and respected by the animal and its human family, its private spot of sorts.

Depending on one's means versus fixation, a simple version normally resembles a wire cage.  Made of robust materials, preferably rust-resistant, it is recommended to procure such a kennel with a sturdy structure.  With the exception of households with smaller pets, those with medium and larger sized dogs may do better with a stronger cage.  In the event of an active canine, the structure should be able to stand up to its movements barring an overzealous move.  For easy maintenance, a bottom tray is ideal to catch dropped food, liquids and fur.  Cage versions also provide better ventilation especially for heavy coated animals kept indoors.  To provide some privacy, a blanket can be strategically draped to minimize distractions and ease the dog's settling into new surroundings.

Collapsible dog crates are ideal for easy relocation as well as bringing along for travels. Many a time, the wire version still remains a relatively bulky item in a suitcase shape. Alternatively, softer varieties with a more pliable structure are better options. Significantly lesser in strength, they are however much lighter and make easier transportation.  Some even double up as furniture within the house by resembling side or coffee tables.  Perhaps more suited for the smaller breeds, these fashionable kennels make great conversational pieces.
