So you have decided to get a pet crate for your dog and now you are faced with the question of what type to get. Maybe you are not even sure what types of dog crates are out there. To answer your questions about crate types and the best one for your situation, I will give you a short review of each here.

The two main types of dog crates are wire and plastic. Plastic crates are also known as carriers and are made of molded two-piece units with ventilation and a door at the front. Wire crates are made from welded metal panels that are hinged together. There are pros and cons for each type; I will discuss the critical ones here.

Plastic and wire crates are both recommended for house-training and both are effective. Which one you choose depends on your own needs and preferences. Plastic pet crates are more den-like because they are more enclosed and private, although you may modify a wire crate to be more enclosed by covering it with a towel/blanket or purchasing a cover set for it. Plastic crates typically meet airline requirements for shipping your pet, whereas wire crates do not. Also, plastic crates are generally less expensive than wire crates. However, plastic crates are susceptible to chewing and are bulky to store. Wire crates are completely collapsible making them easy to store in small spaces. The openness of wire crates also allows for your pet to see all around him and provides better ventilation for snub-nosed dogs that may have trouble breathing in a plastic crate. Both types of dog crates come in a variety of sizes to accommodate any breed of dog, from a tiny Toy Poodle to a huge Great Dane, so your selection depends on your preference and needs, both now and in the future.

Some other types of dog crates that are available include soft-side, wicker, and wood or end table crates. These types of pet crates are not recommended for training purposes but instead provide a more attractive alternative for the mature and trained dog. These also come in a variety of sizes, although extreme sizes may be more limited. Soft-sided crates are excellent choices for someone on-the-go as they are simple to break-down and set-up. Wicker and wood crates offer a more attractive option than the standard wire or plastic crate. Again, these are not training crates but are a desirable option for the dog owner who wishes to purchase a crate for their dog but also wants something that complements the decor of the room that it will be set up in.
