Having a dog is a wonderful experience, someone to greet you when you come home, always happy to see you. But you are also tied to a schedule. You have to get home so your dog can relieve itself. Spontaneity goes out the window.

Recently, there has been an innovation in the form of a plastic grass tray. This works well for urine, but not necessarily feces, especially if the dog has an intestinal upset. Cleaning the results can be messy, smelly, time-consuming work.

Teaching your dog to use a litterbox will solve all these problems.

If your dog has had obedience training, it will be easier than otherwise, but do not despair; almost any dog can be trained to use a litterbox.

First step in dog litter training, you need a litterbox. Toy or small breeds can use a covered cat box with the door removed, larger breeds need something bigger. Using half an appropriately sized plastic dog kennel works well. You'll want to partially block the cut out for the door so there is a good lip. (Dogs are by nature diggers, so you want the sides to keep the litter inside the pan.)

Second, litter. There are several commercially made dog litters, usually recycled paper. Unless you're sure your dog won't try to sample the litter, stay away from clumping or clay based litters.

Third, cleaning products. Until we get Sparky trained, there are going to be accidents.

Fourth, treats and enthusiasm. Positive reinforcement is crucial for getting the point across.

Just like housebreaking a puppy, consistency in dog litter training pays off most quickly. First thing in the morning, right after meals or naps, and any time you see the telltale signs, sniffing and/or circling, take him to, or put the dog into the litterbox, tell him to 'go potty', or whatever phrase you care to use. If your dog actually accomplishes the task, go nuts. Praise him mightily. Give him a treat. If he is a dog that loves to play, give him a couple of minutes of happy play.

You can help get the idea across by soaking a small piece of paper towel in his urine and putting it in the litterbox. This will attract him back to the litterbox and let him know what's expected. If possible, change this out every day or two.

Conversely, if you don't notice the signs in time, make a sudden sharp noise such as a handclap, or 'AH!' noise to stop him. Then get him to the litterbox so he can finish. Use the phrase you have picked for using the litterbox several times, then (even if he does nothing) praise him.

When you clean up the accident, make sure you get it all. A dog's nose is exquisitely sensitive and will be able to smell things even if you can't. Most hard surfaces are fairly easy, but carpet can be a challenge. Using an absorbent towel, place it over the wet spot and step on it several times. Move the towel frequently so there is always a dry part of the towel over the spot. When the towel stays dry when you step on it, use a product specifically designed for removing pet urine, following the directions on the label. [Using a product that is not made for just this problem can actually 'set' the stain and odor in the carpet.]

Soon, your dog will realize there is an acceptable alternative to going outside. Then if you get an invitation for a fun activity after work, you can actually go and enjoy yourself, with no worry about whether your dog is suffering. Plus, when the weather's bad, you can both stay warm and dry.
