Crate Training For Puppy – Eight Tips On Crate Training For Puppy

Getting a puppy is an exciting time in anyone’s life, but crate training for puppy can be a challenge.  Crate training is one of the best things you can do with a puppy.  A crate makes your puppy feel safe, even though you may think it is cruel to confine a puppy to a crate.

Not sure where to start crate training for puppy?

Here are some tips to point you in the right direction.

1.  Choose a crate that is the right size for your puppy.  Make sure that the crate is big enough for your puppy and will still be large enough when puppy grows up to a full sized dog.  If you find that the crate is too large, you can partition it off.

2.  Your puppy’s first experiences with the crate are very important.  Allow the puppy to explore the crate, put some treats inside, along with comfortable bedding and some chew toys.

3.  Once your puppy gets used to the crate, try to feed the puppy all their meals in the crate, but with the door open.

4.  Close the door with the puppy inside and feed it some treats.  Leave the puppy in the crate for about 10 minutes, then let it out again.

5.  Increase the amount of time that the puppy spends in the crate gradually.  Don’t increase it too quickly, or the puppy will become distressed.

6.  The first long amount of time puppy will spend in the crate is overnight, so make sure the puppy is next to your bed in your bedroom.

7.  Any time your puppy shows interest in the crate, give them praise and treats.

8.  Eventually, your puppy will go into the crate on their own.  You can use cue words like “go to your crate” or “night night”, whatever you like to suggest that your puppy needs to go into the crate.

Crate training for puppy is the quickest method to housetrain your puppy.  Immediately after letting the puppy out of the crate, reward it with a treat and let it outside to go to the bathroom.  If your puppy has an accident in the crate, do not punish it.  Clean it up immediately and use an odor neutralizer.

Always remove your puppy’s collar when it is in the crate to eliminate any chance of the collar getting caught on the crate.  If you are consistent, before you know it crate training for puppy will be complete and you will be able to leave the puppy in the crate for several hours.
