Are Todays Kids Too Soft?

There was an item recently featured in one of the newspapers, which questioned whether the kids of today were missing out on life's experiences and asked if the children were growing up too soft, in this age of the computer. Todays kids, so the article argued, unlike those of previous generations, sought excitement through playing computer games rather than experiencing adventures, playing in the great outdoors.The article got me thinking.

Do children no longer play cowboys and indians in the woods armed with bows and arrows, or have mock battles with wooden swords and shields? No more trolley races, birds nesting or secret hideouts in the hedgerows where we attempted to smoke the twine from a tree. Personally, I am not certain that yesterday's more rigorous upbringinging was preferable but it had to be more fun.

I have been swimming for as long back as I can remember, I suppose I must have been about 8 years old and attending junior school in a small rural town in England. There were no facilities there for this activity, but there was the fast flowing river Dart that ran through the town. Ice cold, after tumbling down from the heights of Dartmoor, I now shudder to think that we children swam there, oblivious of the water temperature and the danger the river posed. I reckon that we had anti freeze running through our blood.

Running parallel to the river was a length of canal, drawn off from the river further upstream which fed the needs of the local abottoir. The canal was where the schools' annual swimming tests were held and the time duly came for class 4B to assemble there one grey cold morning. We were instructed to strip down to our swimming trunks and line up on the edge of the canal. I have no recollection of any of the teachers similarly prepared.

Those of us, thought less likely to drown, were encouraged to enter the canal and swim between markers that had been chalked onto the concrete edge of the canal. If successful, a certificate was to be awarded, proclaiming to the world, that the bearer had been judged proficient in swimming a distance of 25 yards. The bottom of the canal was thick with long weeds which swayed in the current, making it impossible to determine the true depth of water. In order to boost her own standing, by getting as many pupils through the swimming test as possible, the school's sports teacher offered her encouragement by whispering to each of us upon entering the water. She advised that we should keep our legs well away from the weeds, as we might get them entangled and drawn down into a watery grave. The effect of this advice was electrifying. The touch of a weed merely brushing against a foot, brought about an immediate panic striken burst of energy which propelled the swimmer along the canal at amazing speed. Many records were broken that day. Needless to say the whole class passed, with special commendations given to the pupils who were seen attempting to walk across the surface in their panic to avoid the weeds.

Many years have passed since those days and I reflect on how things have changed since then. What would the 'health and safety' brigade say if teachers attempted the same today. On another occasion the school arranged to take the class to visit the largest employer in the town. All we youngsters knew about the place was that bacon was made there, the means by which this was achieved did not occur to us. Determined to educate us into the finer details, we were herded into the area where the raw material 'on hoof' was being unloaded from lorries. At this point we were all delighted to be amongst the animals and all of us children chased around the pigs attempting to pet one; the full horror of what was about to happen didn't occur to us. It was but a few minutes later that the teachers ushered us in single file passed the stunning pen, followed by the slaughter pen where a few flecks of blood, that ran like a river between the feet of the slaughter man, landed on the clean white blouse of one of the girls who promptly collapsed in a faint. Undeterred in their determination to give us a good grounding in education, the teachers led the rest of us through the bristle burning, scrubbing, deboweling, slicing and chopping departments. We were finally led into one of the large curing kilns and remained there for what seemed an age, no doubt intended to ingrain the lesson that we had just received.

The pupils of class 4B finally emerged into the sunlight. Like walking wounded wearing blank expressions, speechless, with faces the colour of alabaster, we were greeted by the factory manager, who handed to each and everyone of us a complimentary packet of bacon.

They don't make kids like that anymore.
